A subwoofer is the part of the audio speaker system in a home or auto system that reproduces the bass frequencies. A cone subwoofer will reproduce the bass tones from about 20 HZ down to 200 HZ, the point where the sound is as much vibration as tone.

Typically drivers found in movie theaters, concerts, radio stations and live records in the 15 to 18 inch range. Car owners and manufactures often add the car subwoofers with the car audio system to enhance their performance and to take them to a new level or sound excellence. In fact the subwoofers are complete loudspeakers that are dedicated to reproducing bass audio frequencies. The frequencies range from 150Hz to as low as 20Hz depending on the taste and requirements of the user. 

Main designs are bass reflex, horn-loaded, band pass, and infinite battle types.

Broadly the subwoofers can be classified into two types. Passive subwoofers consist of the subwoofer driver. On the other hand the active subwoofers have an inbuilt amplifier in the subwoofer. 

Numerous qualitative subwoofers that are used for the car audio and stereos are available in the market today. Recently the Infinity Systems, one of the units of Harman International Industries announced their new line of subwoofers.
